Katie Silver's lunar-projectile plan destroyed the hawk patrolling Earth while Echo remained protected behind the Moon. The operation sacrificed an unmanned shuttle to accelerate a spherical rock.
Also recorded as: Destruction of the Earth-patrolling hawk
Preparation and impact
Engineers shaped a lunar boulder into a perfect sphere. Echo released it into the shuttle's hypersphere, then the drive's destruction delivered the stored energy at once. The projectile clipped the hawk at a controlled angle, passed above the North Pole, and escaped into space. The hawk fell into the Atlantic.[1]
Reason for the method
A shuttle could not build enough speed over the short Earth–Moon distance, and its irregular shape would have made the post-impact trajectory unsafe to calculate. The glancing strike limited the energy delivered toward Earth. Echo recorded the event at nanosecond intervals.[1]
