The Copious expedition is the first attempted human mission beyond the solar system, intended to seed an extrasolar world with Earth life. The former warships Formidable and Echo each carry about a thousand people.
Names, outcomes, and discoveries from later histories are concealed in spoiler-light mode.

Organization
Steve Thomas holds overall command, with Kip Eastcott commanding Echo. Civilian leaders are to take power after successful settlement. The ships carry scientists, botanists, architects, former soldiers, doctors, and equipment to print seeds and embryos. Avalon Brookes's new sphere drive is intended to sustain eighty percent of light speed.[1][2][3]
Disaster
Formidable engages its drive first after clearing the Keiper Belt. Uncontrolled acceleration separates it permanently from Echo; Echo's later return brings its passengers almost ten thousand years into the future rather than to Copious.[1][2]
