War service
Thomas fights alongside Kip Eastcott in the same battlegroup during the six-year war. He saves Echo from Odin at Jupiter and destroys the Martian flagship despite its captain's offer to surrender, following a policy adopted after false Martian surrenders. The voices of Odin's crew recur in his dreams; the aftermath also contributes to the breakdown of his marriage.[1][2]
Copious expedition
Thomas volunteers for the first attempted human expedition beyond the solar system, seeking a mission that creates rather than destroys. He arranges for Avalon Brookes to travel aboard Echo and remains awake while the passengers and other crew enter stasis.[1]
Engine emergency
When Formidable's sphere drive accelerates uncontrollably, Thomas orders contact with Echo and runs to engineering on deck eight. Purple fractal energy throws him against a bulkhead as he reaches for the manual override. He loses consciousness before Formidable can confirm his condition.[1]
