Origins and fighting
The Senate rejects Mars's self-declared independence, and Mars strikes first against a lunar helium-3 plant. Fighting includes repeated changes of control at Jupiter station and Formidable's destruction of Odin. Martian false surrenders lead Earth to abandon clemency toward surrendering enemy ships.[1][2][4]
Settlement and aftermath
Despite winning, Earth grants Mars much of what it had wanted rather than taking all its resources. Veterans debate the settlement, while some regard the war as an avoidable waste. Earth and Martian former servicemen later travel together on the Copious expedition.[1][3]
Legacy
Echo retained scorpions designed to overwhelm enemies in swarms, even after conversion for a colonization mission. Sarah and Eastcott drew on their wartime experience while confronting the Flaxens and Brookes. Eastcott remembered feeling remorse after destroying Martian ships, a contrast to his later hatred of the Flaxens.[6][7][8]
