Ancient United Earth is the interplanetary government under which Echo and Formidable begin their service. Its Senate authorizes the Copious expedition after the war with Mars.

War and peace
The Senate considers the self-declared Martian Confederacy an illegal secession from the Union. United Earth wins the ensuing six-year war but grants Mars much of what it sought. Over the following centuries the independent worlds cooperate on major scientific projects.[1][4]
Government and science
United Earth operates a fleet of AI-controlled starships and a Science Commission. Its expedition regulations reserve command to the ships' captains until a Copious settlement is secure. Contemporary United Earth later adopts the ancient state's name in deliberate imitation.[1][2][3][5]
