Independence and cooperation
Mars's declaration of independence leads to a six-year war with United Earth. After defeat it receives many of its original demands, and later cooperates with Earth on Venus's terraforming and the construction of Cylli.[1][2]
The Titan and abandonment
The Titan first infects people at a Martian research facility and spreads through interplanetary travel. Cylli later reports seeing no one left on Mars, though Eastcott promises his Martian volunteers a search for possible survivors after addressing Earth's crisis.[2][3]
The broken dome
Brookes landed near a dome fifty miles across and entered through meteorite damage. Its orbital protection had failed long before. Ruins and buried remains lay where forests, lakes, homes, and children had once filled the artificially sustained environment.[4]
Material recovery
Brookes spent more than eighteen hours working on Mars. He recovered exotic metal from the ruined dome and used it to improve his sphere beam and make the remote mirror for his attack on Cylli.[5]
