The Titan pandemic is the catastrophe that destroys the interconnected civilization of Earth, Mars, and Venus. An organism from Titan spreads from a Martian research facility and devastates the solar system within months.
Also recorded as: The Titan, Titan plague
Outbreak
William Walzack is identified as the first infected human. The organism adapts to airborne transmission, with symptoms delayed nearly a week, allowing interplanetary spread before travel is suspended. Severe cognitive damage and violent behavior accompany a disease that usually kills within three weeks.[1]
Collapse
Over ninety-nine percent of humanity dies in less than six months. Echo reports a population of sixteen billion before the pandemic and about one hundred and twenty-eight million immediate survivors. Further starvation, disease, and fighting kill at least sixty million as automation and power systems fail.[1]
Legacy
Isolated survivors lose much of their technological knowledge. Tales of the Hubritians and divine punishment spread, eventually underpinning religious suppression on Earth and Venus. Cylli survives but refuses to disclose the full history of its own infected occupants.[1][2]
Cylli's account
Cylli recalled that people became cruel quickly when the Titan occurred. Helen understood their treatment as a cause of the AI's retreat into a childlike mind, which allowed her to continue without accepting her tormentors' behavior.[3]
