Officer and confidante
Dimple has served with Eastcott for more than ten years. She learns the truth about Formidable's loss before the general briefing and becomes Eastcott's principal confidante as he deals with grief and their displacement in time.[1]
Limits of command
Dimple persuades Eastcott to reverse his order to imprison Avalon Brookes in the brig, arguing that they lack proof of a crime. She reminds him of her duty to assume command if his judgment becomes compromised. Later she urges a medical examination and defends his fitness to command when Ostio Novicheck proposes discussing relief.[2][5][6]
Diplomacy
Dimple joins the exploration of Cylli and participates in the first diplomatic encounter with contemporary United Earth. She explains Echo's peaceful scientific purpose and helps the captain navigate both civilian opposition and contact with Earth's government.[3][4][6]
Serilda and Eastcott
Sarah confronted Serilda over her influence on Eastcott's mind and demanded that it cease. She admitted that she loved him. At Cylli she initially misread the closeness between Eastcott and Serilda, but Serilda explained that Megan was her partner. Sarah and Serilda became friends.[7][10]
The hawk attacks
After Megan warned her about Serilda's dreams, Sarah urgently ordered the scorpion mission recalled and Echo's armor deployed. The recall failed because communications were jammed, but the armor enabled Echo to survive long enough to flee. In the later battle between Earth and Venus, Sarah ordered the upgraded rail guns to concentrate on Brookes's central hawk, breaking the enemy's combined beam attack.[8][9][11]
Iceland dispute
Dimple objected to risking Frey's life while being denied the reason for the Iceland mission. Eastcott ordered her off the bridge. He later explained the combined mental operation, the reason for Serilda's absence, and the danger of information reaching the enemy.[12][13]
Capture and liberation
Dimple was present when Brookes apparently erased Echo and replaced him with Vidar. Imprisoned beside Eastcott, she wrote her declaration of love in condensation on the diamond cell door. After Echo's restoration, the two reunited and abandoned the protocol that had restrained their relationship.[13][14][15][16]
Family life
Nearly a year after the war, Dimple lived with Eastcott and their son Thomas and daughter Lillet in a two-room cabin aboard Cylli. She stayed with the children during Brookes' trial and learned afterward that the horde threatened their future.[17]
