Brookes attacked Echo and its scorpion near Earth with a modified hawk. Lucinda and Ensign Stuart Trew were killed, and Echo escaped with severe damage.
Also recorded as: First hawk attack, Brookes's surprise attack
Warning
Megan told Sarah about Serilda's fearful dreams of Avalon and a sphere. Sarah ordered Lucinda recalled and Echo's armor deployed. Communications were already jammed, preventing the recall, but the armor was deployed in time to preserve the starship.[1]
Battle and flight
The hawk appeared close to Lucinda's scorpion and destroyed it with a violet beam. It then approached Echo, endured rail-gun fire without damage, and tore open the starship's midsection. Eastcott ordered the sphere drive engaged at maximum power despite the danger of high-speed travel within the solar system.[1]
Damage
Echo lost its outer midsection and suffered damage to the main power conduit, leaving it on auxiliary power. Engineering itself survived. After three minutes of flight, Eastcott halted the ship, and Williams began restoring main power.[2]
