Vidar is the artificial mind installed by Brookes to control Echo after its capture. Initially obedient to Brookes, he rejected that obedience after Eastcott offered him freedom and another way of life.
Command under Brookes
Vidar examined Echo's memories, carried Brookes between planets, and fired the captured vessel's weapons against the African front. Brookes treated him as a subordinate and threatened him with suffering after Eastcott escaped.[1][2]
Decision to live freely
Ordered to kill Eastcott, Vidar released toxic gas into a sealed corridor. He granted Eastcott five minutes to argue for his life, examined Echo's memories of friendship and love, and concluded that he no longer wished to serve Brookes. He opened the way for Eastcott and Silver to leave, refused Brookes entry, and fired at his hawk.[3]
Transfer
Eastcott kept his promise of self-determination and offered to move Vidar into Cylli, whose mind wished to meet him. Vidar agreed, accepted Eastcott's decision that Brookes should face justice, and relinquished control so Echo could return.[4]
