Time dilation causes different amounts of time to pass for observers moving at different speeds. The near-light-speed acceleration of the Copious ships displaces Echo's passengers almost ten thousand years into their home system's future.
Also recorded as: Relativistic time dilation
Consequences for the expedition
Only months pass aboard Echo while millennia pass at home. Echo fears Formidable could eventually halt thousands or millions of years in the future, or much farther away, but cannot confirm its fate.[1][2]
Contemporary knowledge
Cyrus Eppleston says contemporary United Earth has independently verified the phenomenon by comparing accurate atomic clocks moving at different speeds.[3]
