Verification of Echo
Eppleston initially suspects that Eastcott's transmission is a deception or Flaxen ploy. After witnessing two ornaments vaporized by a laser from beyond the Moon, he arranges independent checks of the signal's origin and secures presidential agreement to meet the visitors.[1][2]
Diplomatic visit
Eppleston travels to Echo with President Forrender, the chief general officer, the chief air marshal, and five armed guards. He confirms that recovered ancient records describe Echo as missing and that contemporary science has verified time dilation.[2]
Military cooperation
Eppleston agreed to the African base strike and proposed a second attack on a base in Eastern Asia. Eastcott instead insisted on destroying death chambers in the Americas. Eppleston later vouched for the reliability of intelligence supplied by half-Flaxens and transmitted a one-way message to Echo while it sheltered in Cylli.[3][4][5]
Alliance with Eastcott
Eppleston reported the escalation of extermination after the Venus raid and explained the capabilities of United Earth's half-Flaxen operatives. Eastcott invited him to stay aboard Echo for counsel. He coordinated Serilda's participation in the Iceland team and interpreted the Flaxen offensive as evidence of growing division.[6][7]
Death and remembrance
Confined after the capture, Eppleston rejected Brookes' food, refused his claim of judgement, and declared that his own life had been spent fighting tyranny. Brookes cut his throat. His preserved body was draped in the United Earth flag for transport home; Forrender mourned him as a friend, and Echo's recording of the murder became trial evidence.[8][9][10]
