Alliance discussions
Forrender agrees to visit Echo after his government verifies the ship's location. He supports a proposed extraction of a mentally gifted human–Flaxen prisoner and provisionally agrees to manufacture supplies requested by Eastcott.[2]
Account of the war
Forrender recounts Earth's religious stagnation, William Hornica's revolution, the rebuilding of United Earth, and the expansion of the Flaxen settlements into conquest. He states that the alleged collapse of Venus's climate protection was fabricated to gain entry to Earth, a deception the Flaxens later admitted in propaganda.[3]
Ceasefire
Forrender told Eastcott that Brookes' African bombardment had killed as many Flaxens as Humans. United Earth held its forces on standby while Flaxen factions continued to fight each other. Their most senior general had approached United Earth to arrange the ceasefire.[6]
Peace and atonement
Forrender mourned Eppleston and agreed to meet Eastcott about Venus. He said that a year earlier he would have accepted nothing less than the destruction of the Flaxens, but had come to understand their circumstances and their right to atonement.[6]
