Disputed authority
Copley demands private consultation before senior briefings and disputes Eastcott's continued command. Expedition regulations delay civilian rule until three months after a colony is judged viable and allow emergency suspension. Echo links Copley's selection to his family's wealth; Helen Chute expresses professional concerns about his behavior without making a diagnosis.[1][2][3]
Refusal of treason
On Cylli, Copley accepts that he wanted power but rejects Brookes's plan to aid the Flaxens, arguing they would exploit and kill human collaborators. After he admits he cannot swim, Brookes pushes him into the river, displays a knife, and leaves him underwater. His final condition is not independently confirmed in these accounts.[4]
Uncertain motive
Eastcott suspected that Brookes had tried to enlist Copley's diplomatic help in approaching the Flaxens and killed him when he refused. The surveillance established the murder but did not establish that explanation for the preceding conversation.[5]
