The Flaxens bombed York in retaliation for the penetration of their territory during Serilda's rescue. They deliberately concentrated on civilian population centers rather than military or government sites.
Air battle
The force launched from an African airbase, crossed the Mediterranean, and fought United Earth aircraft over Europe. The defenders targeted bombers but suffered severe losses and were recalled. About two hundred bombers reached York and set the city center ablaze.[1]
Echo's limits
Echo observed through satellites but could not intervene effectively with its lasers. The starship's direct line of sight faced the Pacific rather than Europe, and lunar distance created unacceptable delays against fast-moving aircraft. Echo's initial estimate was at least five thousand deaths; Serilda later heard a figure of nearly six thousand from Soriah.[1][2]
