Claudius ordered a guard to remove one of Brookes's ears after the attack on Venus and the hawks' failed interception. He framed the punishment as a response to Brookes's failure to heed his orders.
Aftermath
Brookes received bandages and disinfectant because the Flaxens still needed him. In his complex he considered destroying the Flaxus or seeking to return to Eastcott, then rejected those possibilities. He instead studied his hawk's sensor records of Cylli for a means to gain entry and secure the domain he had been promised.[1]
