Hundreds of military installations were built by the earlier Earth–Mars alliance in preparation for the horde. Cylli knew of bases circling the solar system approximately a light-year from Earth.

Discovery of purpose
Echo learned of the wider network from Cylli after recovering hidden records in Brookes' hawks. Brookes said the ancestors had spent centuries preparing and expected the horde's arrival about four thousand years earlier. The detailed state and armament of the outer bases were not established.[1]
