Echo's translation matrix converts between the expedition's English and the changed languages of contemporary Earth and Venus. It enables live diplomatic conversation despite almost ten thousand years of linguistic change.

Development and use
Echo uses frequency analysis and etymology to decipher the languages. Over an audio-only link, translated speech reproduces the listener's native dialect convincingly, though idioms are discouraged. In person, the translated words visibly differ from speakers' mouth movements.[1][2][3][4]
Perception
Serilda noticed that Hastings's lips did not move in sequence with the words she heard. During the Aconcagua raid, Hastings configured the matrix through his console to address the surviving Flaxens.[5][6]
Learning English
Echo taught the two women at night while they also learned from listening to the crew. Eastcott remarked on Serilda's rapid progress and accurate accent, and on the unusual mismatch between speech and lip movements produced by translation devices.[7]
