Selection
Echo reports that fit captives are kept as laborers, while people considered too weak are killed immediately. He tells Eastcott of camps throughout the conquered territories.[1]
Coercion
Serilda explained that prisoners knew the chamber's purpose. Those who refused to enter were tortured and killed in front of the next group, giving captives a coerced choice between a quick death and prolonged public killing. Claudius later insisted that victims must know who was ending their lives.[2][3]
